U.S. Online retail growth slowed "dramatically" after the second quarter, chief financial officer bob swan warned in a conference call with analysts. The forecast for the christmas quarter was subdued, and the share subsequently fell by around five percent despite strong quarterly figures.
In the third quarter, sales still rose by 14 percent year-on-year to 3.9 billion dollars (2.9 billion euros). Profits improved by 15 percent to 689 million dollars, thanks in part to the sale of shareholdings. The growth was achieved despite a "lackluster macroeconomic environment," but group chief executive john donahoe stressed on wednesday at the company’s headquarters in san jose, california.
Above all, the payment subsidiary paypal was able to make gains. The traditional trading platform and the service branch for corporate customers were in line behind it. A good third of new customers in the past quarter came from mobile devices.
"Mobile customers actually have enormous potential," explained arnulf keese, paypal’s managing director in germany. "They conducted twice as many transactions as the average paypal user. His manager colleague michael kliger pointed to increased cross-border purchases as another reason for the growth.
But investors were disappointed by what they saw as an overly cautious outlook for the final quarter. Here comes the important christmas business. Ebay had already disappointed investors with its forecast in the previous quarter. Now the company expects full-year earnings to be at the lower end of the previous range.
The ebay marketplace now has 124 million active users worldwide, 15 million more than a year ago. Ebay lives on fees for completed transactions. In contrast, its major rival amazon also acts as a seller itself.
Paypal has 137 million accounts, an increase of 20 million over the previous year. Again, it’s transaction fees that make ebay the money. Ebay had only recently announced that it would strengthen its foothold with the acquisition of online payment processor braintree, which handles, among other things, the money transactions for sleeping place broker airbnb or restaurant reservation service opentable. The acquisition will cost the group 800 million dollars.
The third pillar of the group is the trading service provider ebay enterprise, which, for example, sets up online stores for customers.
